He posted on Twitter a picture of an emotional farewell with his family at Sydney airport, with the caption: 'Been fun, I'll miss you guys'.

Coach Adrian Lam told Wigantoday last week that he was happy for Hastings and Bevan French to have extended time at home with their families this year, given the disruption and length of the 2020 campaign, the two-week quarantine when they flew back before Christmas as well as the ongoing Covid pandemic in the UK.

“It’s been more beneficial for me as a coach that they stay in a healthy environment, Covid-free, with their families, and maintain their training," he said, reporting both had been following tailored training programmes.

Presuming his route back avoids countries on the government's red list, there is a 10-day stipulation to quarantine - but that can be halved if he tests negative after five days. Only then he can return to training.

Wigan play a friendly against Hastings' former club Salford on Sunday, 12 days before they start their Super League campaign against Leigh at Leeds.

Bevan French is expected to fly back soon.

The full-back returned home just before the first lockdown last year to see a sick relative and Lam says he was happy for French to spend as much time with his family as he can before coming back.
