The Liam Farrell Column: Ryan can be a mighty force for the Raiders

It seems every week at the moment we’re talking about people leaving and they are all big ones.

Ryan Sutton is a player we will especially miss.

Sutty is still pretty young, but he’s already one of the best forwards in Super League – in four to five years’ time there won’t be many better than him.

While it’s disappointing to see him go, I back him for what he’s doing.

He’s thought long and hard about it, and it’s not a decision he’s taken lightly.

I’ve no doubt he’ll do really well in the NRL, and if he does he could be there for a while.

Canberra have got themselves a great player – he’s one of the first names on our team-sheet every week – and in the near future he’ll be an England candidate.

Having said that, he has lots of hard work in front of him, though he has been in a good environment to prepare as this club has standards just as high as clubs in the NRL.

I think he can be capable of being one of their starting props.

Our focus switches to the Challenge Cup this weekend and we’ve got Warrington up again, who will be out to avenge their Magic Weekend loss to us.

Josh Charnley will be up against us, and he had some things to say about his first match against us when we faced in Newcastle (page 22).

But there was nothing personal and Josh wasn’t targeted for special treatment. We just had to do a job on him the same as we would against any other winger as good as him.

He brings the ball back really well and we had to shut him down.

Of course a place in the semi-final is at stake, and I think it’s great that they are making the last four a double header at Bolton’s Macron Stadium.

Anything to make the Challenge Cup better is welcome, and if we get through there also won’t be too far for us to travel!

The Macron holds about 30,000 and you’d hope the RFL and the four clubs involved will do a job in trying to fill it.

And if that happens the idea might stick.

We’re also aware of the fact Sutty has joined the club of people leaving us who we want to send out on a high.

You have to be professional in approaching games and not letting emotion take over, but it is in the back of your mind and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

You want to do your best for your mates and make sure they remember the club well.

The cup match also gives us a chance to get back to our best.

The Hull KR match was put to bed by us first thing on Monday morning, and that was a frustrating performance given how good we felt we played against Warrignton the week before.

It wasn’t the Wigan Warriors of 2018, and was our first real slip up.

Yes we’ve lost two other games, but the Saints loss could have gone either way and Warrington earlier in the season was under different circumstances.

It wasn’t acceptable when you consider what our standards are at this club, but we have been working to put it right.
