It is understood the full-back is close to agreeing a release from the remaining few months of his Warriors deal, ending any prospect of him pulling on the Cherry and White shirt again.

As a free agent, he would be able to negotiate a move – or even a trial – as soon as the Super League season restarts, rather than wait for the end of the year.

He has already been linked elsewhere with a move to Salford, who need a new No.1 to replace Castleford-bound Niall Evalds.

The Frenchman has played just one reserve game for Wigan this year.

His first-team chances would have been limited if he had stayed, with Bevan French thriving at full-back and Zak Hardaker – currently at centre – also in the squad.

Escare joined Wigan from Catalans Dragons ahead of the 2017 season and kicked two goals in the World Club Challenge victory against Cronulla.

Soon after, he was handed a new three-year deal and was in the Warriors side which won the Grand Final in ‘18.

But when Hardaker replaced Tomkins the following year, it removed the option of bringing Escare off the bench and, after struggling for game-time, he finished last season on loan at Wakefield, where he injured his shoulder in the final game.

At 28, he still has plenty of time left to revive his career and exhibit the attacking flair which persuaded Warriors to bring him to the club in the first place.

Wigantoday revealed on Sunday that another player soon out of contract, Ben Flower, had tied up a move to Toronto Wolfpack for 2021.
