Morgan Smithies aims to get 'back firing' for Wigan Warriors after suspension

The forward is back in the mix after serving a six-game suspension - two of which was for a head-butt.

And while Lam doesn’t want to curtail any of his fire and aggression, he hopes he can avoid any future bans. “He’s an important part of our squad and we’ll welcome him back with open arms,” said Lam.

“Morgan’s still a teenager, he’s done a great job for us

so far and he’s constantly learning.

“I don’t want to ever take away the aggression – and that’s for all the young players – the lesson is to be smarter, know the limits.

“And I want them pushing the barrier to the limits.

“The minute I say don’t be as aggressive, they’re different beasts.” Smithies was given a four-match suspension for a Grade D charge of dangerous contact on Castleford’s James Clare during August’s 30-22 win, as well as two weeks for a headbutt earlier in the match.

The crusher, he insists, was accidental – though he understood why he was punished.

But he hopes to stay on the right side of a ‘fine line’ in future.

“It’s been very tough being out for so long, watching the lads on TV and not being out there and not being a part of it in some big games,” said Smithies.

“The crusher was totally accidental, definitely.

“With the headbutt, there’s a fine line. I’m not going to change the way I play, but I realise it’s about being aggressive but not over-aggressive.

“This ban has made me realise, if I take it too far I could end up getting banned again, and I definitely don’t want that.

“I’m glad it’s over, and I can’t wait to get back firing now.” Smithies is on course to return in tonight’s Super League showdown with Warrington – a match which has taken on greater significance after both were dumped out of the Challenge Cup last weekend.

“It will make it even more interesting, two teams trying to prove a point after last week,” added the Halifax-born forward.

“It’d be a good game to come back into, if I’m picked.”
