Sarginson discovers '˜taste' for new season

The England international had been sidelined since last July with a nasty hamstring injury which impacted on his pre-season training.

But after receiving the green-light to play last Friday, the 22-year-old started at left centre as Wigan opened their new Super League campaign with a 12-6 win against Catalans.

Sarginson said: “I had a 20 minute run-out against some of the Under-19s the other day but, apart from that, I’ve not played.

“So it was great to be back out with the boys again - I got the taste for it again this season.

“With the injury, the coaches and physios were on to me to not take as many carries as I usually do, so I left that up to Gells (Anthony Gelling) and he really stepped up to the plate.

“By the second half I felt I found my feet again, I felt good out there.”

The game was scrappy throughout but Wigan adjusted better to the boggy pitch and rain-lashed conditions.

The forwards limited the impact of Catalans’ star-studded pack, and the defence only leaked one try.

“We made a few silly errors ourselves, they have a massive pack but ours stood up to the mark,” said Sarginson.

And he was particularly pleased to see new recruit Willie Isa settle seamlessly into the Warriors line-up.

“Willie was outstanding,” the ex-London Broncos ace added. “It was his first game, but the way he runs it in you’d think he’d been here two or three years.

“He’s really gotten into him what Waney wants an I think he’ll have a really good season.”

Wigan travel to Huddersfield this Friday and are back at the DW Stadium eight days later for a World Club Series showdown against Brisbane Broncos.
