The former England captain, 38, called time on his distinguished playing career at the end of last season to take up a coaching role with his hometown club.

He is helping oversee pre-season training alongside first-team assistant coaches Matty Peet and John Winder - head coach Adrian Lam is home in Australia.

O’Loughlin said: “There have only been eight or 10 players in so far, so it’s been good to get the chance to learn the ropes without many people there, and Matty and John are great people to work under and learn from.

“Knowing the game and having played the game is one thing, but there is a lot to learn, from reviewing the games to assessing people, drawing up plans.”

He doesn’t expect there to be any awkwardness with players, having made the transition from team-mate to coach.

“It’s something I have thought about,” he admits.

“The boundaries change but you can maintain those friendships and bonds when you’re a coach and player, rather than team-mates.”

“Plus, primarily, my focus will be on the younger players, so I don’t think it’ll be an issue.”

Players and coaches are working to strict Covid-19 protocols but O’Loughlin says they are grateful to be able to continue doing what they love.

“There’s definitely an appreciation there,” he said.

“During the first lockdown, sport was part of it, we were all at home waiting for the nod - so now we’ve got the chance to continue, while the lockdown is on, I think everyone is grateful for that chance.”
