'Six again' rule to be discussed by rugby league bosses today

The NRL introduced the change when the competition restarted, which sees teams penalised for ruck infringements by having the tackle count restarted instead of a penalty awarded.

The RFL board members will meet today to discuss - among other things - introducing the rule here and winger Marshall believes it will improve the spectacle.

“There have already been some changes recently aiming to speed the game up and I liked them,” said the winger, nodding to the shot-clock in particular.

“I’ve watched the ‘six again’ in the NRL and I like it, the flow of the game stays like it is, without the interruption of the penalty. It’ll help the backs, definitely.”

Sky Sports pundit Brian Carney has questioned whether the rule change is being rushed.

The ex-Wigan winger told the Golden Point vodcast: “What I have an issue with is the methodology behind the change. It’s never robust decision-making - it should be, it never is.

“The ‘six again’ rule, after one round in the NRL, people were saying, ‘Bring it over here’. Will they speed the game up to an unrealistic level? Will it lead to more blow-outs? You only learn that over a long period of time, not after one round.

“Super League is not in desperate need of a quicker ruck. We pat ourselves on the back for being a sport willing to change, but we change too often.”

The RFL board will also discuss scrapping scrums this year and whether to cancel promotion and relegation.
