The 21-year-old is set to be recalled for tomorrow’s mouthwatering derby in place of Dom Manfredi.

He suffered a serious knee injury last week and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Tierney, who has missed the last two matches, is now set for a prolonged role in the side starting with tomorrow’s televised showdown with St Helens.

But he would much rather be watching from the stands if it meant his pal Manfredi was fit.

“It’s heartbreaking for Dom,” said Tierney.

“He’s been killing it all year and I think he’d have walked into the England team at the end of the season.

“I’m gutted for him, really gutted for him.
I wouldn’t wish that (ACL) injury on my worst enemy,
and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Shaun Wane may be without both his first-choice wingers as Josh Charnley is doubtful with a bang to his knee, with centre Oliver Gildart on stand-by to fill that role.

“If I come in, it’s a big challenge for me, and I’ll just try and do my best,” said Tierney.

He has played 17 games this season and scored Wigan’s only try in a 21-4 loss to St Helens last month.

Tierney says they have learned lesson from that DW humbling.

“It was good to get my first try against Saints but we didn’t perform and didn’t get the win,” he added.

“We watched it back and we thought our defence was ridiculously good, but the little things in our attack cost us.

“We missed five or six try-scoring opportunities, and you have to take those chances, especially against a team like Saints.

“They’re getting wins under the belt and coming strong, so it should be feisty like the last one.”

Captain Sean O’Loughlin is still missing with a hamstring strain which kept him out of Friday’s 36-22 defeat at Castleford.
