There was hope he may be back in action for the bumper Easter schedule, which starts with next Friday’s trip to St Helens.

Tomkins, though, says he faces several more weeks on the sidelines.

He said: “Early May is when I’m aiming for.”

When the full-back underwent knee surgery last November, chairman Ian Lenagan said in a statement: “Wigan fans can look forward to him returning around the Easter period.”

But the 26-year-old says his recovery is on track.

Tomkins told BBC radio: “(May) will be the right time-scale. It’s all on track, the specialist is happy with it, and fingers crossed it will all go okay.”

Coach Shaun Wane will wait until early next week to check on injured forwards Joel Tomkins and Willie Isa, who are due back within the next two weeks.

George Williams has also missed the last two games with a back problem. Prop Dom Crosby is still out and Micky McIlorum is sidelined until the end of the season.
