Wane: Why I'm expecting a response

Shaun Wane has drawn parallels with last year as they count down towards the Magic Weekend.

The Warriors were under immense pressure 12 months ago following a 58-16 thrashing in Catalans, but they responded with a stunning 27-12 win against Leeds.

This Saturday they again head to Newcastle’s St James’ Park for a headlining game against the Rhinos.

And while their last result was nowhere near as severe – a 30-16 loss to Hull FC last Friday – Wane made the link between the build-ups.

He said: “Last year we went there after one of the toughest weeks ever, after Catalans, but they responded.

“The players have pride in their performances and they didn’t like me being so upset with the way we rolled over.

“And I hope they do that again, because we were miles off last week.

“We’ve had our bad day, the players have spoken well and been honest, they know they dipped below our standards.

“Now the mood has been really upbeat and I can’t wait for Saturday to put it right.”

Prop Tony Clubb was last night undergoing a scan on a neck injury which may rule him out.

Kiwi centre Anthony Gelling and forward Liam Farrell remain doubtful but Ben Flower is expected to return.
