Adrian Lam struggled to put into words his disappointment after Wigan were defeated in the last play of an incredible Super League Grand Final against St Helens.

The game had looked set fr extra-time with time almost up and the scores locked at 4-4, before Saints' Tommy Makinson lined up a drop goal from long-range.

Fortunately for Wigan, the ball hit the upright but, as Bevan French waited for the ball to bounce, former Shevington Shark Jack Welsby pounced to touch down as the hooter sounded.

"I don't know what to say to be honest, it's surreal," admitted Lam, whose side had scored the only other try through Jake Bibby.

"Obviously it's absolutely heartbreaking for the team, the supporters and the club.

"We did everything possible to get the win, and I thought we deserved it.

"We had opportunities to win the game, we couldn't quite convert them, and I think that's what got us in the end.

"Probably four or five times we lost it when we looked like we were going to score, we didn't execute well enough."

When asked on Sky Sports whether it had been the best Grand Final ever, Lam replied: "It's the best defensive Grand Final we've seen.

"I thought our boys were exceptional considering we had so little of the ball.

"They had all the field position, and we kept turning up for each other, but it was tough.

"There were a couple of defining moments in the game.

"We gave away a few penalties to keep them in the game, we had a penalty at the end to win it, Zak's conversion that hit the crossbar - and it wasn't his fault, but it was so close.

"I'm just really proud of who we were tonight, and of course you don't want it to end like that, because I thought we deserved to win a Grand Final."
