Why Sam Tomkins expects George Williams to get even better in the NRL

Tomkins expects Canberra to adjust their style to make the most of his old Wigan team-mate's strengths.

Williams was widely praised for his performance in the Raiders' 22-6 win at Melbourne when the NRL restarted following the coronavirus-forced break.

And though they lost against Newcastle Knights last weekend, Catalans ace Tomkins saw enough to be impressed.

As halfbacks go, he believes the 25-year-old Wiganer is the complete package.

"George's performance at the weekend, although they lost, he was the best Canberra player on the pitch," Tomkins told the Sky Sports Goldenpoint vodcast.

"I'm just really happy he's showing what he is capable of.

"He got a taste for it at the start of the year (before the break) and he's showing what he's got.

"In terms of an overall halfback, I don't think they come much better than George.

"At the weekend his kicking was on point every time. He's known for his short kicking game but his long kicking game was equally as good.

"And if you look at the game the week before against Melbourne, George was the best player on the field by a mile, and it was his running game that stood up."

Tomkins expects Raiders coach Ricky Stuart will utilise Williams' attacking threats more as the season unfolds. They take on Michael Maguire's Wests Tigers on Saturday (10.35am, UK).

"He's the sort of player who makes defence stand still and I'm sure the Canberra Raiders, now they're seeing what they've got, their game plan will be tilted towards getting George the ball in a bit more space," said Tomkins, who played in the NRL with New Zealand Warriors.

"At Wigan, he's done it for a long, long time, and the scenarios of four attackers and four defenders gets set up a lot and I think he's the best in the world at that.

"Without a doubt he's going to keep getting better, the more the Canberra Raiders can sculpt their game around George."

Tomkins, meanwhile, says he would back a move to introduce the NRL's 'six again rule' into Super League.
