Wigan skipper Liam Farrell set to feature against Tonga confirms Shaun Wane

England head coach Shaun Wane has confirmed that Wigan skipper Liam Farrell will be drafted into his 17 for the second test series against Tonga.

Farrell, 33, was named 18th man for the opener at the Totally Wicked Stadium, with the host nation claiming a 22-18 victory in St Helens thanks to tries from Toby King, Mikey Lewis and a brace from Catalans Dragons Grand Finalist Tom Johnstone.

The five-time Super League Grand Final winner will replace Saints forward Morgan Knowles, who will miss the remainder of the historic series due to a thumb injury.

NRL superstar Dom Young has also been hospitalised after having an abscess drained and will miss the series, while Wane has confirmed another injury to his squad.

Tommy Makinson won’t play and obviously Morgan Knowles won’t play, so that’ll be Liam Farrell and Matty Ashton in,” Wane told media at Robin Park Arena on Wednesday.

“Tommy has got a bang to his wrist, but he’ll be OK for the third test I’m sure.”

On Farrell’s inclusion, the ex-Wigan boss continued: “Obviously I’m a big fan of Liam Farrell and to bring him in, his experience, captaining Wigan in Grand Finals, he’s a great one for team spirit and togetherness.

“He’s an awesome player.

“There’s areas where he needs to improve, but overall he’s a fantastic back-rower.”

Wane also invited members of Wigan’s Under-16s and Under-17s to join in a training session against England’s best.

"It’s a bit of a dream for them,” he added.

“They’re tough Wigan kids and got bashed about a bit and will have a good sleep tonight!”
