Wigan Warriors centre Gildart on the '˜right' track

Oliver Gildart may have a new role to play when he makes his return to action later this month.

The 22-year-old quickly cemented Wigan’s left-centre spot after breaking through into the side.

But during his absence with a broken thumb, fellow centre Dan Sarginson has lined up in that position for the last three matches.

And Sarginson has looked far sharper than his earlier matches this year at right centre.

Shaun Wane admits he may keep with Sarginson at left centre even when Gildart returns, possibly for the visit to St Helens at the end of the month.

Wane said: “Sarge is a left centre, he’s played the majority of his career in that position and if he keeps on killing it that’s where he’ll stay.”

Asked whether Gildart could play on the right side, Wane replied: “He’s going to have to.”

With mid-season recruit Chris Hankinson – who joined from Swinton – also on the sidelines with a retina injury, forward Willie Isa is expected to again fill in at right centre in tomorrow’s clash at Catalans.

Winger Dom Manfredi could be another option down the track.

“Dom can play centre, he’s got good skills,” said Wane.

“I’d be confident with him. But Gilly is good for Saints so we should be okay soon (at centre).”
