Wigan Warriors' focus on ourselves, says Thomas Leuluai

Thomas Leuluai admits there has been little point scrutining their opponents ahead of tomorrow's restart.

The Warriors take on Wakefield as part of a triple-header at Leeds' Headingley.

And having not played for five months, the veteran Kiwi says the attention has all been on themselves.

"We've talked about their key players but there's not really been much point looking too closely at them - they've not played in five months," said Leuluai.

"And we've got so much stuff we need to get right ourselves, too. Our focus has been about getting our plays on again and getting our fitness back up."

Wigan were joint-top of the table when the season was halted in March.

But with a slimmed-down fixture list greeting them on their restart, only four play-offs spots and eight teams split by just two points, Leuluai admits the next few weeks may be frantic.

"It's going to be full on and we've got the Challenge Cup in there too," he said. "Lammy made it clear we need a fast start, it's important we get that."

The players returned to official training little more than two weeks ago, with strict Covid-19 protocols in place.

Super League has not reported a positive test and coach Adrian Lam has stressed how important it is they follow the government guidelines.

"If someone gets it in the group it's going to be really difficult to manage, I'm sure if one gets it, 10 get it, then 15, then what next?" he said.

"So that's the danger and we're doing our best we can to abide by the rules.

"We've briefed the players and the education through the RFL has been pretty good.

"If one player takes to the field you can imagine how it would have an impact moving forward. Let's hope that never happens and everyone does the right things."

Lam spoke to numerous NRL coaches about their experiences of returning to action, in terms of workload in training and common injuries.

He added: "Part of the secret to the success of this season will be recovery and the size of your squad. Midweek games, you're going to have to use the players, we're prepared to do that. Nearly our whole squad will get an opportunity."
