The Warriors have been playing messages of support from some of the club’s biggest names on their social media channels.

Ex-wing stars Henderson Gill, Martin Offiah and Jason Robinson, Welsh dual-code great Scott Quinnell and former skippers Dean Belll and Andy Farrell are among those who have shared videos.

And Kiwi Henry Paul and Grand Final-winning coach Michael Maguire also got involved, urging fans to keep safe – while also reminiscing about their good times at the club.

Matt Hennessey, the club’s head of communications, said: “What we’re trying to do is keep our fans engaged and entertained as much as possible during unprecedented times for the country, and the messages from some of the game’s greats are helping do that.

“(Rugby executive) Kris Radlinski has been leading it, he’s been getting in touch with many of his ex-team-mates and they’ve obviously got great memories of their time at the club.

“With that, there is an important public health message and if we can use our reach to hammer that home then great.

“We’re seeing the community spirit come to the fore because it is a challenging time for everyone and for those fans who are at home, self-isolating... if we can brighten up their day with a 90 second video from their favorite player, then great.”

Wigan have also showed old games on their subscription TV channel as well as their Facebook page.

Last week they showed the 2007 play-offs comeback at Bradford in full and on Good Friday, treated fans to the 2004 derby.

With the coronavirus lockdown having a major impact on our town centres and many of our valued advertisers - and consequently the advertising that we receive - we are more reliant than ever on you buying a copy when you pop out for your essential shop or subscribing for delivery.

Our journalists are highly trained by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and our content is independently regulated by IPSO to some of the most rigorous standards anywhere in the world. Our content is universally trusted - as all independent research proves.

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.
