And he is confident the showdown – between the Super League and NRL champions – will be staged at the DW Stadium in February.

“Our clear preference is to play at the DW Stadium and it appears to be happening,” Lenagan told League Express.

“The date for the game is not yet finalised and it is dependent on lots of things, including Sky’s broadcast plans.”

He said new Super League chief executive Robert Elstone was involved in arranging the game.

“Everything at the moment appears to be very positive,” he added.

The Warriors won the WCC last year at home by beating Cronulla and also hosted St George Illawarra in 2011, while they travelled to Sydney in 2014.

Last week the NRL said it would like the WCC to be played in USA or Singapore in either 2020 or beyond.
