The Wigan coach, who himself is on a rolling contract, says all clubs are facing financial uncertainty as they deal with the fall-out from the pandemic.

The Warriors have three players out of contract – Sean O’Loughlin, Thomas Leuluai and Joe Burgess – while Jackson Hastings and Oliver Gildart have NRL release clauses.

Executive director Kris Radlinski and chairman Ian Lenagan oversee the long-term planning and squad building, with the coach’s input.

Lam said: “This has absolutely made it harder to plan for next year.

“We obviously know the salary cap limit but what are clubs budgeting for? It may take a while for everyone to know where they’re at, financially.”

One player Wigan have been linked with on social media and messageboards is Warrington and England forward Ben Currie, who is out of contract.

But his agent, Craig Harrison, told the Wigan Post: “There’s no truth in that (rumour), 100 per cent. There’s nothing in that.”
