Details of the funeral of Sir Billy Boston have been announced
Details of the funeral of Wigan Warriors legend and rugby league’s first knight Sir Billy Boston have been announced.

The Warriors, along with the Boston family and Sue Gibbons Funeral Service, have published the details of the funeral of Sir William John (Billy) Boston KBE.
Sir Billy sadly passed away at the age of 92 on Monday, August 24, 2026, surrounded by his family and was recently remembered and celebrated ahead of Wigan’s win over Hull KR last Thursday.
The Welshman’s funeral will take place at the Brick Community Stadium on Thursday, September 10, 12:30pm, conducted by Fr Paul Grady, with a limited number of supporters invited to attend. The West Stand at the Brick Community Stadium will be open as Sir Billy makes his final journey down the stadium tunnel.
The club say attendance of the funeral will be limited to enable them to safely work to capacity limits. Attendees will be required to make a £1 per person donation, which can only be made online in advance, with full proceeds going to Wigan & Leigh Hospice in memory of Sir Billy and his beloved wife Lady Joan Boston, who sadly passed away in July, aged 90. The general public wishing to attend must register their attendance via the donation link that has been provided via the club website.
The stadium turnstiles will open from 11:15am, and the club encourages all those with a pass to be seated by 12:15pm, with the funeral service starting at 12:30pm. Attendees can use Car Park 1 on Stadium Way.
At the request of the Boston family, anyone in attendance is encouraged to wear traditional funeral attire, but items of cherry red can be worn, such as scarves, ties and headwear.
For those not in attendance at the Brick Community Stadium, fans are welcome to pay their respects to the passing funeral cortege, which will proceed through Wigan. The club say a full cortege road map will be available for reference in due course. An order of service booklet will also be available to download via the club’s website ahead of the funeral for those wishing to follow the service.
For those unable to attend in person, the funeral service will also be live-streamed for free on Wigan TV, so everyone can join in remembering and celebrating Sir Billy’s life.
A private burial will take place following the service. The funeral will be family flowers only, but any additional donations to Wigan & Leigh Hospice can be made in memory of Sir Billy and Lady Joan Boston.
The club say more details will follow in due course.
