Williams: We'll soon start blowing teams away

The Warriors have opened the season with three Super League wins from three - their best return since 2010.

But low points hauls and some clunky attacking plays have been a source of frustration for some fans.

Williams, though, is confident their strike force will reach high-altitude soon.

“We’re learning from it,” he told the Evening Post when asked about their attack. We’ve not started the best in attack but we’ll always score points, we’re that kind of team.

“Our defence has been bob-on but when we can build on our attack we’ll start blowing teams away.”

Normally, the KC Stadium could be circled as a points-fest for Warriors fans braving the M62 on a Friday night.

With a win record which stretches back six games to 2010, Warriors have averaged 42 points a match at the KC during that spell, with the most points conceded standing at 20 in 2013.

But Hull FC’s aggressive recruitment for the new season has been no secret, with NRL stars Frank Pritchard, Sika Manu, Carlos Tuimavave and Mahe Fonua joining the ex-Warrior Scott Taylor to make many pundits predict a brighter season this time than their eighth-placed return from 2015.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Williams said. “The’re playing pretty well and have made some big-name signings so it’s going to be a test for us - but one we’re looking forward to.

“We’ve got three out of three and we’ve still not played that well yet so it’s looking good and we’re all confident.”

Like many of the current starts in the Warriors ranks, Williams has never suffered from the bitter taste of defeat at the KC, having come off the bench in 2014’s 44-16 success and scoring a try in last year’s 48-12 win. He also featured in England’s win over New Zealand at the venue last autumn.

But the 21-year-old’s focus is on helping Warriors find their rhythm in attack, and he is well-placed for the job.

Dealing with some raised eyebrows from the terraces early last year, when he was named first choice stand-off following Blake Green’s departure, Williams and Matty Smith forged a strong partnership which helped Shaun Wane’s men to a third straight Grand Final.

And he is confident Wigan’s attack will be tuned and ready to be cranked up to 11 soon.

“Last year didn’t start too well but this year I’m just trying to find my stride and I’ll be fine,” he said. “Hopefully it goes to plan and we get a few points on them but Hull are a good team and will do all they can to stop us doing that.”
