Guard of honour for Orrell legend Des Seabrook's final journey

They formed a guard of honour on Lodge Road, near to St Luke's Church, to pay their respects to him before his funeral at Wigan Crematorium.

Many of those who applauded wore Orrell training tops or shirts, many others Black and Amber ties.

The cortege route also took in Edge Hall Road, the venue where Seabrook helped cast his legacy over many years and in various roles - as a player, coach and administrator.

He was the driving force behind Orrell when they were a top-flight side, he captained Lancashire and as a coach, he led the North of England team to an historic 21-9 victory over New Zealand at Otley in 1979.

“Des was an outstanding player, a great rugby brain and a fantastic coach," said England great Bill Beaumont, now the chair of World Rugby, shortly after Seabrook's passing earlier this month.

"Des had enormous respect and everyone enjoyed his company.

"A very proud Lancastrian and Englishman he was one of three outstanding rugby brains from Mid Lancashire, along with Fran Cotton and Brian Ashton.

"He was a great guy, a huge influence on younger players and he’ll be very much missed.”
