Cleary, a former director of building firm Jackson Lloyd, was well known in the Wigan area and rugby union circles.

He played a key role in Orrell success in the 80s and early-90s, and also represented Lancashire and the North of England. Later in his career, he was selected for the Irish Wolfhounds and the Irish Exiles and played in the newly-formed Hong Kong 10’s.

Nephew Mark Lloyd, himself a former Orrell player, said: "Dave was an absolutely massive personality.

"He was adored by everyone who knew him - if you mentioned his name, their faces would light up with a smile.

"And in most cases, they'd each tell their own story about Dave which would inevitably finish with a laugh!
