"Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Di, son Jonathon and two grandchildren.

"Des was one of the greatest driving forces behind the playing side of Orrell Rugby Union.

"As a player and club captain, Des was instrumental in Orrell becoming a major force in the north and in the resurrection of the Lancashire Cup.

"His leadership on the field was legendary and later, as club coach and director of rugby, he was influential in Orrell remaining ever-present in National Division One.

Former England captain Bill Beaumont was one of the first to pay tribute.

"Very saddened to hear of Des Seabrook's passing," he tweeted. "He was a visionary, a truly great coach and good friend.

"Fabulous memories of being coached by him, including the 1979 north of England win against the All Blacks.

"Deepest sympathies to his wife Di, son Jonathan and grandchildren."

Stephen Jones, rugby correspondent of the Sunday Times, added: "Rugby lost one of its very best people today with the death of Des Seabrook, absolute giant of rugby and fantastic man.

"Powerhouse of Orrell in great years, coach of North when they blew away the All Blacks. Des was blunt, humble and lovely. Best to his family and legions of pals."
