Lego Dimensions: One of the best Lego games in existence

It seems Lego can’t do anything wrong. Their games just keep getting bigger and better and it made perfect sense to adopt the new craze of toys-to-life started by Toys for Bob’s Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure.

I forever wondered though, which characters will feature in a game like that? Lego have patented loads of franchises. Will they include all of the ones not yet featured in their own game?

Let’s step into Lego Dimensions, Travellers Tales and Warner Bros’ toys-to-life adventure out now on all formats.

The plot sees the despicable inter-dimensional Lord Vortech who wants all of the Foundational Elements to merge all universes into one so that he can control them. Batman, Lord of the Rings’ Gandalf and The Lego Movies’ Wyldstyle all find themselves jumping in and out of Lego universes to go after their friends who unknowingly had possession of them. This is one of the coolest Lego adventures of them all. Why? Because it features Lego universes such as Scooby Doo, Ninjago, Doctor Who, The Simpsons and even Back to the Future which all intertwine. Sadly though, unless you purchase the characters featured in these universes which are sold separately, they are unplayable. Yep no longer can you unlock characters by completing challenges or story levels so if you want to play as Homer Simpson, you’ll have to fork out, and boy are they expensive.

Let’s talk about pricing which easily is the biggest issue here. Lego Dimensions Fun Packs which have one character and one vehicle set you back £15. Team Packs which have two characters and two vehicles cost you £30 and Level Packs which feature one character, vehicle and an associated gadget (which unlocks the levels) are £30 too. It’s a lot of money to unlock sections of a game. The Starter pack though comes with the portal pad and the three star characters and the Batmobile which are all you need to complete the main story. Once you get to the hub world of Vorton though, you’ll see the many gateways to the different worlds which are locked unless you own characters from those worlds. Unlocking them though opens up an open world free roaming world where you can collect gold bricks, red bricks and even use collected studs to fix key locations, its massive!

The main story though is like every other Lego game. Levels are set out the same and are instantly familiar from the start. Using Batman’s grapple gun and Batarangs to solve puzzles and defeat enemies as well as Wyldstyles acrobatics and Gandalfs staff is incredible fun and as simple as ever. The new feature here though is the Portal pad. It has three lit up sections which are an integral part of the puzzles in the game. Wyldstyle’s master building requires you to move her minifigure across all three sections in sequence. Defeating certain enemies or solving certain puzzles will mean you use paint blobs to paint your character one colour and place the minifigure in the correct section to create the correct pattern. It’s a brilliant feature and very imaginative.

Portal 2, Scooby Doo, The Simpsons and Back to the Future? Wow!

Clever integration of the Portal Pad.

Great level designs and boss fights.

All-star voice cast.

The cost!

Can’t unlock characters and vehicles like other Lego games.

Lego Dimensions is a fantastic basis of a potentially expansive monster. With the popular TV shows, movies and games included here in wave one, we can only imagine how Travellers’ Tales will expand with more. Let’s just hope you don’t need a new portal and have to cough up another £80 (yep, the starter pack is £80). As you can tell, the pricing is the main issue here. Collecting everything available to unlock the full experience will cost you a small fortune and with more stuff surely to come soon, you’re going to need a bank loan. Get past this and you have one of the best Lego games in existence with all of the humour intact.
