Lottery Winners' top support slot
One of the borough's most popular up-and-coming music acts has landed a prestigious support slot at what promises to be one of the highlights of Wigan's music calendar this year.
The Lottery Winners will open for Starsailor when the group famous for hits including Silence is Easy returns to the borough to play at Robin Park this summer.
The group, made up of singer and guitarist Thom Rylance, guitarist Rob Lally, bassist Katie Lloyd and drummer Joe Singleton, were chosen for the gig after Starsailor front man James Walsh recommended them following a string of festival appearances.
The Leigh band’s addition to the bill is also appropriate as the members of both The Lottery Winners and Starsailor went to Wigan and Leigh College.
Front man Thom said: “It’s nice to play with a band which is obviously local to here. We got taught by a lot of the same people at the college and it was where my musicianship really evolved.
“It’s really good to appear with Starsailor. James is a fan of us and we’re a fan of him. I think it’s going to be a very special occasion and it’s really nice that this gig is at Robin Park and isn’t in Manchester or Liverpool.”
Starsailor singer James said: “I saw The Lottery Winners at a festival a while back and was very impressed.
“They’re an energetic band with a charismatic frontman.
“I soon discovered they went to the same college as us. I think it’s fitting to have a quality band from the area to join us on this momentous gig.”
The Lottery Winners will perform in Wigan on the back of a UK tour which Thom says has seen them hone their 30-minute set into a form he and the rest of the group are extremely happy with.
The Starsailor gig, which is being organised by Leisuretec, is the latest in a string of prominent appearances which has seen the group play with the likes of Madness, Jamie Cullum and The Charlatans.
Starsailor are returning to the borough to perform live in support of their greatest hits album.
Starsailor and The Lottery Winners will perform at Robin Park on July 13. Tickets are on sale now at www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/ZMI1307
