Pupils at a village school near Wigan are doing their bit to make it a better place
Pupils in a village near Wigan have been leading by example with their litter-picking
The children at St Teresa’s RC Primary School in Up Holland are proving that even small actions can make a big difference!

Inspired by the work of local volunteers at Cleaner Greener Up Holland, the children have been taking action to keep their community clean and tidy through litter-picking.
Before the summer break, volunteers from the organisation visited the school to talk to the children about the work they do to improve the local environment.
Inspired by their visit, some pupils asked to borrow litter pickers over the summer holidays so they could help tidy up their local area.
They did such a fantastic job that the school approached Cleaner Greener Up Holland with an idea: why not create a scheme allowing children to borrow litter-picking kits at weekends and make a difference in their own community?
Thanks to the generosity of Up Holland Parish Council, 14 litter-picking kits were donated to St Teresa’s to help bring this idea to life.
Each kit contains a litter picker, a hi-vis vest, gloves and a handi-hoop to help keep litter bags open.
An information sheet is also provided with essential health and safety guidance, ensuring children and their families can take part safely.
The scheme is organised by Year 4 volunteers from the school’s Care for Creation Team, who prepare the kits each week and distribute them to children who have requested them.
Mrs Dunn, KS2 leader, said: “The response has been fantastic, with demand so high that a waiting list is now in place!
“It has been wonderful to see the photographs shared by families after each weekend, showing children working alongside their loved ones to make their neighbourhoods cleaner and greener.”
The positive impact goes beyond litter picking. Children have been stopped in the street and praised for their hard work, showing just how much their efforts are appreciated by the wider community.
A school spokesperson said that this inspiring initiative is a wonderful example of children leading by example, encouraging adults to get involved and demonstrating how working together can create a real and lasting difference.
It is hoped that the scheme will continue to go from strength to strength
