Wigan and Leigh Hospice launches first Twilight Walk for an evening of remembrance

Later this month Wigan people will pay to take a contemplative evening stroll around the Amberswood Nature Reserve in the first ever Twilight Walk in remembrance of loved ones and to raise funds for the borough’s hospice

Wigan and Leigh Hospice is inviting local people to come together this September for its first ever Twilight Walk - a special evening dedicated to remembering and celebrating the lives of loved ones.

Taking place on Thursday September 17, the gentle walk will begin and end at Wigan and Leigh Hospice on Kildare Street, Hindley, guiding participants through the peaceful surroundings of Amberswood Local Nature Reserve.

Created especially for people who wish to remember someone they love, the Twilight Walk will offer a calm, inclusive space to reflect, share memories and come together with others.

Along the route, walkers will have opportunities to light a candle, leave a message and take a quiet moment to remember someone special. Whether their loss is recent or many years ago, everyone is welcome.

Lindsey Butler, fund-raising and community engagement manager at the charity, said: "We know that for so many people, memories of someone they love are never far away.

“We wanted to create an event that gives people the time and space to remember those special people, while coming together as a community.

"Our first Twilight Walk is going to be a really special evening.

“It's not about speed or distance – it's about taking a moment to reflect, share memories and celebrate lives.

“We hope people will join us, walk together and help us continue providing vital care and support to local families."

Registration opens at the main hospice building at 5pm, with the walk beginning at 6pm.

The registration fee is £25 for adults and £10 for under-18s, and every participant will receive a free event t‑shirt.

Refreshments will be available to buy at the hospice before and after the walk.

Fund-raising is crucial to the day-to-day running of the hospice. While it does receive government money, most income it has to generate itself.

No sooner had Makerfield MP Andy Burnham been appointed Prime Minister, Wigan and Leigh Hospice bosses were pressing his new government for “fairer funding.”

Mr Burnham later visited the hospice himself and afterwards he announced he was donating 15 per cent of his monthly MP salary to the cause.
