Tony Porter ponders: a letter to our new prime minister and so much hate for some 'art' in Wigan

Tony Porter’s message to Andy Burnham and his thoughts on new artwork at Haigh Woodland Park.

Andy Andy Andy, you make it so difficult writing a piece on a new era as PM on a Sunday night, when you will only announce things on Monday onwards.

One snippet is the possibility that North Sea drilling may restart, a no brainer in my eyes, but hopefully tempered with the building of multiple nuclear power stations that can keep the lights on during non-windy dark winters.

Plus, a push to develop green hydrogen in the UK for the aerospace industries as well as vehicles and scrap this electric vehicle push nonsense.

Give old industrial sites to companies like BMW and Toyota with caveat to employ locals and become world leaders in the vehicular power reforms we need. Imagine the batteries needed to make a passenger aircraft fly.

We need a clean sweep of all the front bench. None have seemed competent in the public’s eyes, back bench them all and choose some keen new blood to fill these seats.

However there is a huge elephant in the room - you know where this is going if you read this column regularly.

Labour in 2024 did NOT get a mandate for the policies they have put upon us. To be fair the policies on the leaflets and in debates have hardly been seen.

One million less votes than 2019, the Tories losing many more to be fair, apathy was the reason Labour got in.

Andy, you were not an MP at the time, you said nothing about becoming a MP, then with less than 26,000 votes, Makerfield voters and a load of Labour MPs, you have become prime minister.

Your policies, whatever they are, have not been put to the public vote. The only way to resolve this is a snap general election.

British politics is at a stage where the public would sooner a made-up character be elected than a sitting MP.

Talk of a 10-year plan is a little premature.

I have spoken to many who voted in the Makerfield by election, they voted for you in order to get Starmer out, but none said they would vote Labour again.

Okay that is a small number compared to the votes cast, but a valid point.

Obviously the lefties will be spitting feathers and typing the usual guff on Facebook, but facts are facts.

The Tories and Labour have destroyed trust for millions in politics. Not having a GE could alienate even more.

I posted on my new long-named Facebook page a short one-minute video showing the slug sculpture in the Walled Garden at Haigh Hall.

I have been following it on Wigan Watch since I saw the hole dug for the pond two or more years ago.

Recently the Walled Garden was locked with a sign saying something on the lines of, “We are working on the new art installation, and we can’t wait for you to see it when it is complete”.

I saw it last week and was unimpressed, as I said if it was a kids competition winner then fine. But it is a Korean-born artist who lives in Berlin that designed it.

The comments on the video were scathing, from totally out of place in a garden that’s meant to be peaceful to words that I could not write on here.
