Wigan Youth Zone invites the community to celebrate its 13th birthday with an Around-the-World adventure

Wigan Youth Zone becomes a teenager this month and it is throwing a free party with an international theme to celebrate

Wigan Youth Zone is marking its 13th birthday in spectacular style with a vibrant, globe-trotting free community event that promises to bring people together through culture, creativity, and fun.

Following last year’s hugely successful Wigan Fest-themed celebration of all things local, this year’s event on Saturday June 13 from 11am to 3pm - takes a bold new direction, celebrating the world.

At a time when the world can often feel divided, Wigan Youth Zone is using this special occasion to unite the community by showcasing and embracing cultures from across the globe.

As Wigan Youth Zone celebrates its 13th birthday, the organisation officially steps into its teenage years, marking over a decade of supporting, inspiring, and empowering young people across the borough.

Since opening its doors, Wigan Youth Zone has become a vital part of the community, providing a safe, welcoming space where thousands of young people have been able to develop new skills, build confidence, and form lasting friendships.

Turning 13 is not just a milestone, but a celebration of the impact the Youth Zone continues to have, and a reminder of its ongoing commitment to helping the next generation thrive.

For one day only, Wigan Youth Zone will be transformed into an immersive international experience, inviting visitors to journey from country to country without ever leaving Wigan.

Attendees can try their hand at didgeridoo making in Australia, smash a piñata in Spain, and dive into a vibrant Brazilian-style colour run carnival (don’t forget to bring spare clothes).

Visitors can also enjoy classic bites in an American diner and then experience wild & wonderful creature encounters with Hill Vale Animals.

The event promises something for everyone, with a packed programme of activities and entertainment designed to engage all ages.

Highlights include sumo wrestling, inflatables, face painting, football, arts and crafts, hair glitter, a sensory room, climbing wall, games and prizes, live entertainment, mocktails, an American diner, Curious Critters, sports, boxing, and dance workshops.

Families, friends, and community members are all encouraged to come along and experience a day filled with laughter, learning, and celebration.

“This year’s event is all about bringing people together” said Kate Rigby the volunteer and training Coordinator at Wigan Youth Zone.

“Last year we welcomed over 1,000 attendees, and we’re aiming to go bigger and better this time. We’re incredibly excited to be celebrating our 13th birthday; it’s a huge milestone as we officially become a teenager. Wigan Youth Zone is a community-focused asset, and giving back is at the heart of what we do.

“This event is our way of celebrating that, with a fun-filled day for the whole family to enjoy while showcasing cultures from around the world in an inclusive and welcoming way.”

The charity was the brainchild of former Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan who said Wigan Boys’ Club turned his young life around. He along with fellow businessmen Martin and Bill Ainscough gave the enterprise the cash boost it needed to get started and local firms are still crucial contributors to its day-to-day running.
