The group is “perfect” for those who need a friendly ear.

A local woman has started a women’s support group to give back to her community.

Alison Emma has set up the ‘Women’s Wellness’ group at The Studio Fitness Centre in Ashton-in-Makerfield as a “free and accessible” option for women to improve their mental health and make friends.

Alison, 54, said she was approached by The Studio’s owner to create a women’s support group, and as a counsellor, was on board with the idea as “there’s lots of people with all sorts of issues, and not enough resources to help.”

“The group discuss everything from health, bereavement, medication, to accessing further support,” said Alison, who emphasised women of all ages, cultures and backgrounds are welcome.

“I have lived in Ashton-in-Makerfield for years, and there has never been a support group specifically for women. That’s why I was encouraged to launch this group.”

Currently, only a small group of women attend, however, Alison is keen to expand the numbers and host a larger event now the school term has started.

Group attendee Heather Whitlock joined Women’s Wellness after experiencing isolation following an illness that left her struggling to socialise and relate to friends. “I like having someone who is willing to listen and who understands me,” said Heather, “and Alison does that.”

“I 100% recommend Women’s Wellness – it can be as serious or as light-hearted as you need it to be, we talk about everything and anything, and always have a laugh when it’s needed.”

Zoe Duffy, a recent member of Women’s Wellness, said: “Today was my first visit to the group, and due to my anxiety I was very nervous to attend. However, I was very welcomed which made me relax.”

“I enjoyed us all discussing our problems openly, and supporting one another with any advice we could give. I will certainly be back again, and will spread the word about this group as other woman may feel alone also. Women’s Wellness would be perfect for them.”

Alongside Women’s Wellness, The Studio also offer strength and conditioning pole fitness classes which encourage mental and physical wellbeing. Alison championed the diverse and welcoming nature of The Studio, stating all members “support one another and are trying to rebuild a community.”

Women’s Wellness is held every Wednesday from 10-11am and welcomes all new members. More information can be found on The Studio’s Facebook page.
