It wants to build an outlet on Princess Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, and has now launched a consultation to see what locals think of the idea.

The multi-million pound investment would see Lidl commit to building its eighth store in Wigan with a 1,230m sq sales area and creating around 40 new full time and part time jobs.

Bosses say the supermarket would boast state-of-the-art facilities including an instore bakery, customer toilets and 80 car parking spaces including five dedicated disabled spaces, six parent and child spaces, and two electric vehicle charging spaces.

During the outline of the plans for the new store, the public are invited to comment on the proposals via a dedicated website and through a leaflet which is being delivered to homes and businesses in the area.

To access the consultation online residents can go to https://tinyurl.com/Lidlashtoninmakerfield before March 19 to take part.

Residents with questions about the proposals can also call Lidl’s consultation team directly by the number 0161 8176225.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property Nick Harvey, said: “We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening a new Lidl in Ashton-in-Makerfield and serving our fresh, quality and incredibly good value produce which shoppers across the country have come to love.

“Our plans are set to create around 40 new positions which would be fantastic for the local community, and we hope that as many people as possible are able to join us for this ‘virtual’ public consultation. We look forward to sharing and discussing our plans with everyone.”

Following the opening of a store in Platt Bridge earlier this year, the new supermarket forms part of the company’s £1.3bn investment plans across Great Britain in 2021 and 2022.

Its ongoing success shows no signs of slowing, with the latest Kantar Worldpanel results highlighting Lidl’s increase in sales year on year and market share of 5.7 per cent.
