Young Wigan entrepreneur launches dog harness business

James, who is studying a marketing degree at Manchester Metropolitan University, created one himself for her and then arranged with a manufacturer in China for a whole batch to be made so he could sell them.

Canine Control now has the design available for residents’ four-legged friends in three colours and two sizes and James says he is hoping to keep the new venture going if the harnesses fly off the shelves.

James, 21, said: “Imogen was trying to find a certain harness for her dog and it just didn’t exist. She couldn’t find one anywhere, so I thought I would design one myself.

“With us being in quarantine there’s not much going on and I thought there was an opportunity to do this.

“They are basically colourful camouflage designs. Hopefully in the future I will come up with more designs. If these are really popular I will keep going with it.

“I will maybe try some different colours. I like the idea of doing three designs at a time.”

James first set up Canine Control in November but only began selling his first 300 harnesses this month.

He is currently in the first year of his undergraduate study and is juggling that and Canine Control around other jobs at an Amazon warehouse and at Nandos.

James says this is his first business venture and he hopes to make enough profit from his harnesses to reinvest money back into Canine Control.
