In the weeks leading up to a performance, children immersed themselves in a creative composition project that challenged them to explore the world of opera and develop their own musical ideas.

Using colours as inspiration for music-making, pupils were tasked with the exciting challenge of composing an original ending to an opera.

Through experimentation with rhythm, melody and musical texture, the young musicians created imaginative compositions that reflected their artistic interpretations.

The celebration event gave pupils a unique opportunity to experience opera first-hand.

Members of the audience enjoyed captivating performances from professional singers from the English National Opera, who showcased the power and beauty of operatic singing.

Children also took part in interactive singing sessions, learning songs from well-known operas and discovering more about this vibrant art form.

A spokesperson for Wigan Music Service said: “One of the highlights of the day came when the pupils heard their own compositions performed as part of the concert programme.

“The moment was met with great excitement and pride from children, teachers and families alike, recognising the hard work and dedication that had gone into the project.

“Teachers praised the initiative for providing pupils with an inspiring musical experience and the chance to work creatively with professional musicians.

"The project not only developed composition skills but also encouraged confidence, teamwork and a deeper appreciation of live performance.”

All participating schools were delighted to be part of the event, which celebrated the creativity and talent of young people across the region.

The spokesperson added: “The occasion highlighted the important role that music and the arts play in enriching children's learning and providing unforgettable cultural experiences.

“As the final notes rang out around Victoria Hall, it was clear that the young composers had risen brilliantly to the challenge, leaving with lasting memories of a truly remarkable day with the English National Opera.”
