GCSE results: Smiles all round for pupils at The Deanery High School

It was an early start as many were eager to see what they had achieved from all their work and study while navigating through a global pandemic.

The Deanery Church of England High School cohort for 2022 achieved better grades than in 2019 and in some subject areas examination grades exceeded the teacher-assessed grades awarded last year.

Callum Jones, 16, from Abram, said: “I got eight in science, nine in PE, eight in English literature, seven in English language, eight in maths, eight in RE and seven in history. I’ve got a scholarship with Wigan Athletic. I’m going to study a B-Tech level three in elite sport. My family are buzzing for me. For the rest of the day, I’m going training.”

Ester Hattingh, 16, from Wigan, said: “I did well in everything, I definitely did better than I expected. I did business, geography and PE, and I want to study biology, chemistry and maths at Winstanley College.”

Chelsea Appiah, 16, from Platt Bridge, said: “I’m proud of all the sixes I got today. I took history, French and health and social care for my options. I plan for a career in medicine and I’m going to Winstanley College. My family have said that they are really proud of me.”

Headteacher Martin Wood said: “We are extremely proud of all of our pupils and wish them every success for their future ventures.

"They have shown such character and resilience over the last two years and fully deserve these outstanding results.”
