The two groups of teenagers have to remain at home for 14 days from when those who received positive test results for the coronavirus were in school and showed symptoms.

The pupils are learning at home and the Ashton secondary school said it was working to ensure their education would suffer the minimum amount of disruption possible.

Headteacher Geoff Baker said: "After consultation with the public health team at Wigan Council we are following their advice and taking the unfortunate step of isolating our year nine and year 11 bubbles.

"We will continue to provide them with everything they need and do everything we can to ensure their learning does not suffer in the time they are away from the site.

"We have had a great start to the year coming back to school with lots of support from the community but this is unfortunately the new reality."
