Dean Trust Wigan, in Orrell, announced it would have to shut shortly after 10am on Wednesday.
A post on the school’s Facebook page said: “Due to an issue with a broken water pipe in the local community, the school currently has no access to water. We have been in contact with United Utilities, who have advised us that the water supply will not be restored for some time.
“In order to protect the health, safety and welfare of all our pupils, the decision has reluctantly been made to close the school to all pupils today. School will be open as normal tomorrow.
“We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation. All parents will be contacted before pupils are dismissed.”
United Utilities’ website says a team of engineers is currently in the area repairing a problem affecting water supply.
A second post on the school’s Facebook page, addressed to parents and carers, said: “Mrs Evans, headteacher, would like to extend her sincere apologies for the closure of the school today due to a burst water pipe in the local community which has left the school without access to running water.
“This was a decision that was made reluctantly and only after much careful consideration. The well-being and safeguarding of our pupils must always remain our top priority, and we felt that closing the school was the most appropriate decision under the circumstances.
“We are pleased to confirm that school will be open as usual tomorrow. All pupils have been provided with homework booklets, which they should complete at home today.”
