Building work has been progressing for the new Aldi store on the vacant Abbey Lakes Hall hotel complex, on Orrell Road, Orrell.

And it has now been revealed that the shop will open its doors for the first time on Thursday, November 26.

Up to 30 jobs will be created at the new supermarket.

It comes just weeks after Aldi opened a new supermarket on Frith Street, off Saddle Junction, to replace the older and smaller store on Scot Lane.

The ribbon was officially cut by Paralympic gold medal-winning cyclist James Ball to declare the new branch open.

The Orrell site is one of seven Aldi stores opening across the country in November, creating up to 210 jobs nationwide.

The openings form part of Aldi’s £370m investment in its UK estate this year, as it works towards its long-term ambition of operating 1,500 stores nationwide.

Aldi unveiled plans for further store investment, continued price cuts and more long-term agreements with British suppliers in its annual trading update earlier this month.

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: “Demand for new Aldi stores remains strong and we’re pleased that shoppers in Wigan will soon be able to enjoy our high-quality products at low prices.

“Opening our new Wigan store is another big step in our growth plans. It will create local jobs and bring Aldi’s value to thousands more shoppers in the area.”
