The area has also seen most deaths from all causes in the three-month period with 66, the statistics analysed by the JPIMedia Data Unit show.

However, proportionally Covid-19 has taken the biggest toll on Abram and Bickershaw, where 64 per cent of all the deaths had Covid-19 as a factor.

Other areas of the borough hit hard by Covid-19 are Pemberton South, where there were 19 deaths involving the virus in some way between the beginning of March and the end of May, Ashton in Makerfield West with 15 deaths and Standish South and Leigh North with 14.

Pemberton South also had the second-highest all-cause death toll with 49 in the three-month period, followed by Hindley West with 44 deaths recorded and Wigan South with 43.

By contrast, seven parts of the borough have three or fewer deaths with Covid-19 recorded in them.

To be classed as a death with Covid-19 the disease was either the underlying cause or was mentioned on the death certificate as a contributory factor.

While all the deaths in the statistics occurred up to May 31 the figures do include deaths which were registered by June 6.

All the figures included in the statistics are provisional.

This data divides the borough into its Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOA).

This is a way of splitting the country up into smaller areas of relatively equal population size for the purposes of doing statistical analysis.

Each MSOA has between 5,000 and 7,200 people living in it.
