The internal figures said that 27,500 people had been to the clinics led by GPs or to hospitals, with the figure running up to the week ending January 24.

In other good news the CCG said many practices have now offered appointments to all the over-80s who are able to travel to a vaccination centre and almost all care home residents and employees have been given at least one dose.

Wigan Council and the CCG also said that 10,000 health and social care staff have now received a vaccine against Covid-19.

The figure of 27,500 residents in priority groups does not include Wiganers who had a vaccination at a regional mass hub such as the one at the Etihad Centre in Manchester or at a hospital elsewhere.

The council and CCG also said those working in the health and care sectors and the over-75s are now the target groups.

In addition residents and staff at 49 care homes have been given a vaccine.

This means the vast majority of those on the top level of the national protocol have received some protection as there are just over 50 care homes in the borough.

Reports on Wednesday suggested around 10 per cent of the UK’s population have now received their first dose of a jab to protect them from Covid-19.

There are now four vaccination centres in the borough, at the leisure facilities at Robin Park and Leigh, St Peter's Pavilion in Hindley and at Golborne Parkside Sports and Community Centre.

Hollowood Pharmacy on Mesnes Street is now also offering jabs.

JPIMedia's campaign A Shot in the Arm continues to campaign for all pharmacies to be able to offer vaccinations as the roll-out continues.

The council has also reminded residents this week that they will be contacted when it is their turn for a jab and asked them not to ring GP surgeries or other health organisations about appointments.

The town hall has said it will release statistics related to the vaccine roll-out every Tuesday.
