The health body said it set up the new communications channel as the limitations on visiting loved ones due to the coronavirus outbreak can be upsetting.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) hopes its solution will bring families a little closer.

The new mailbox has been set up for friends and families to send messages to patients via email.

The messages will then be printed and delivered to the ward, where possible.

Vicky Bolton, patient relations manager at WWL, said: “It is important that we are able to keep our patients and their loved ones as connected as possible during what can be a very worrying time.

“In setting up this inbox, we can bridge that gap, send a comforting message and perhaps raise spirits as best we can.”
