A Wigan GP practice has highlighted its “zero tolerance” policy after staff faced “racial comments”.

Shevington Surgery said several staff members had received the comments and it was “completely unacceptable”.

It warned patients would receive a formal warning for such remarks and could be removed from its list if they failed to comply.

A post on the practice’s Facebook page said: “We are writing to address a serious matter that has recently come to our attention.

“It has been reported that members of our team have been subjected to racial comments. We want to make it absolutely clear that this behaviour is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our practice.

“We are proud to serve a diverse community, and our team is made up of dedicated professionals from a wide range of backgrounds.

"Every member of staff deserves to work in a safe, respectful and supportive environment. Racism, discrimination or any form of abusive language will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“Our practice operates a zero tolerance policy. Any patient who makes racist or discriminatory remarks towards our staff or other patients will receive a formal warning. Further incidents may result in removal from our patient list and, where appropriate, reporting to the relevant authorities.

“We kindly ask all patients to treat our team and fellow patients with courtesy and respect at all times. Together, we can ensure our practice remains a welcoming and safe place for everyone.

"Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.”
