Accident involving a lorry causes severe delays throughout Wigan town centre
The A49 Wigan Lane, Lower Standish, was closed in both directions due to the incident
An accident involving a lorry caused severe delays throughout Wigan town centre this evening (May 7).
The A49 Wigan Lane, Lower Standish, was closed in both directions due to the incident between A5106 Chorley Road, near the Boar's Head, and Elmfield Road.
There was congestion to Standish town centre and severe delays in Wigan town centre as traffic tried to divert the closure.
Motorists also experienced minor delays through Red Rock.
The road was shut at 5pm after a generator fell from a lorry and caught fire, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.
Prior to this, the road had been blocked for ten minutes.
Nobody was injured with the scene made safe and handed over to police by 6.30pm.
Transport for Greater Manchester urged drivers to avoid the area and seek an alternative route.
The road reopened at about 8pm.
