There was congestion to Standish town centre and severe delays in Wigan town centre as traffic tried to divert the closure.

Motorists also experienced minor delays through Red Rock.

The road was shut at 5pm after a generator fell from a lorry and caught fire, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

Prior to this, the road had been blocked for ten minutes.

Nobody was injured with the scene made safe and handed over to police by 6.30pm.
