Concerns after fire involving '˜stolen' car

Firefighters spent an hour tackling a car fire on open land in Wigan this afternoon.

The Seat car was suspected to have been stolen before the fire started on land off Millers Lane, Platt Bridge.

A crew from Hindley fire station was called at 2.30pm and had to carry hoses from the road to the blaze.

Crew manager Craig Cubbins said there were concerns about the environmental impact of the fire on the landscaped area, which is used by children and dog walkers.

He said oil and chemicals from the car could get into water and affect newts.

He also highlighted the resources needed to deal with the fire, which was tackled by four firefighters.

Mr Cubbins added: “It’s a burden on the local council because they will have to go to try to remove it.”

The fire has been reported to the police.
