Concerns over more parking problems

A bid has been submitted to the town hall for the transformation of a property on Bridgeman Terrace into a 15 bedroom facility.

The street, which runs adjacent to Mesnes Park, has seen an influx of housing plans in recent years, some attracting opposition because of their impact on parking.

Planning documents submitted to officers last month say the vacant former hair salon location could become a house of multiple occupancy.

The plans incorporate the change of use for the three-storey building along with the demolition of a rear garage and the creation of a vehicle crossing on Wrightington Street, to the rear of the property.

The documents read: “The new fitout as proposed, provides three floors of accommodation, ground, first and second behind the original unaffected retained façade.

“Externally, three car parking bays are provided along with a small yard. Garden land is not viewed as required given the proximity to Mesnes Park which is 50m away to the south.”

The latest application follows the recent conversion of the former tax office further up on Bridgeman Terrace into 30 residential flats with just a handful of parking spaces.

Ward councillors George Davies and Michael McLoughlin had voiced concerns about its impact on residents already experiencing parking woe in the area.

The planning documents state the development will include 15 spaces for bicycle parking, suggesting the property, if given planning approval, will be marketed to tenants without motor vehicles.

A neighbourhood consultation period for the plans comes to an end next week.
