A stand-off with a “distressed male” led to a residential road in Wigan borough being cordoned off this afternoon (Monday).

Police and an ambulance crew raced to the scene in George Street, a cul-de-sac off Rosedale Avenue in Atherton, shortly before 3pm.

They were responding to reports of a “distressed male” at an address on the street.

A GMP spokesperson said the scene was cordoned off for public safety while a negotiator was called in to help deal with the incident.

It is believed the man – who is aged in his 50s - “hurt himself” but he is not threatening or holding anyone else hostage, and no arrests have been made.

The spokesperson said: “He is not engaging with police so a negotiator was called in. No serious injuries have been reported.”

A police van, three police cars and a tactical aid unit were reported at the scene.

George Street is lined with a number of flat complexes including The Beeches.
