Christopher Holden, 32, of Siddow Common, Leigh, admitted to Wigan and Leigh magistrates that he had a large kitchen knife in Bradshawgate on November 3.
He also pleaded guilty to threatening Heather Cartwright in Tyldesley on October 24.
Justices gave him a total of 26 weeks behind bars for the crimes, saying that the offences have been aggravated by his having a previous knife possession conviction.
Holden was ordered to pay £100 in compensation to his assault victim and is the subject of a restraining order which prevents him from having any contact with her for a year including entering her street.
