Motorist spared jail over hit and run collision

A man has admitted being involved in a hit-and-run crash while banned from the road.

William Phillip, 45, of Findlay Street, Leigh, had been charged with driving a VW Golf which damaged a Ford B-Max on Sandy Lane, Hindley.

He also pleaded guilty to careless driving, having no insurance nor licence and possessing amphetamine when he appeared before Wigan justices who gave him a 16-week prison sentence but suspended it for 18 months.

They said the incident was particularly serious because he had shown “scant regard” for other people, including a passenger he had in the vehicle with him at the time.

Phillip was banned from driving for three years, ordered to complete 19 days of rehabilitation activities and faces a court bill of £213.
