Wigan and Leigh magistrates heard that 26-year-old Josh Andrusjak was caught stealing meat from Wigan’s Lidl superstore on Darlington Street last Saturday and, in the process of being detained, he inflicted injuries on both PC Powell and Lawrence Coles.

The defendant, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to theft and two counts of assault by beating on his first appearance at the court.

The bench said they were sending him to prison because he had a history of violence and because of the “particularly nasty” biting attack on the security guard.

Andrusjak was ordered to pay £100 in compensation to PC Powell and £50 to Mr Coles.
