Sweet-toothed thief jailed after repeatedly stealing from shop

Philip Atkinson went on six shoplifting sprees at the same store, mainly to steal chocolate.

Wigan magistrates heard that Atkinson repeatedly visited The Range in Leigh between May and September to pilfer items including deodorants, coffee and gin.

But, the bulk of his loot was chocolate, his penultimate trip to the shop netting £236 of the stuff.

Pleading guilty to six counts of theft, the 41-year-old of Oxford Street in Leigh was sent to prison for a total of 18 weeks and ordered to pay The Range £706 in compensation.
