Wigan brothers face disability scooter death crash charges

Two brothers have been accused of causing the death of a disabled Wigan man by dangerous driving.

Michael Smith was riding his mobility scooter along Poolstock Lane when he was in collision with a Vauxhall Zafira which then hit a van and a house.

The 53-year-old suffered serious head injuries and died later in hospital.

Hanzah Yusuf, 20, and Noor Mohammed Yusuf, 30, both of Park Lane in Abram were arrested shortly after the tragedy on February 28 2019 and after 18 months under investigation have now both been summonsed and then charged with death by dangerous driving.

The pair are due to make their first appearance before Wigan and Leigh magistrates on Wednesday October 7 and remain on bail until then.

Noor Yusuf is further accused of driving while uninsured while his sibling is also charged with possession of a bladed article.

A 14-year-old boy, who was also arrested on suspicion of causing Mr Smith’s death by dangerous driving, was later released without any further action being taken.

After Mr Smith’s death, his family issued a statement through the police which read: “Michael was a gentle giant. He had a heart of gold and would try and help anyone. He was the most caring person and would phone up his mum numerous times a day.

“We are all very much in shock and no words can describe how much pain we are all in.”
